Common Lock Emergencies and How to Handle Them
What to do first when a key snaps, a lock jams or you find signs of a break-in.
Locked out
Stay calm and check every door and window you can safely reach. Ask whether anyone has a spare. If not, call a locksmith and do not force a window. See lockout help.
Key broken in the lock
Do not try to push the broken piece in with the rest of the key, and avoid glue or pins. Keep the broken half; it helps the locksmith cut a new key after extracting the piece.
Lock jammed or will not turn
Do not force the key. Check whether the door is pressing on the bolt by pushing or pulling the door while turning. A dry graphite lubricant may help; household oils can attract grit. If it still will not turn, call before the key breaks.
Lost or stolen keys
If your keys were with anything showing your address, rekey as soon as possible. For a car, a new key can be cut and the lost key removed from the car's memory on many models.
Signs of a break-in
Do not go in. Call 911 and wait for police. Once they are done, a locksmith can repair or replace damaged locks and secure the door.
Car key will not turn in the ignition
Turn the steering wheel gently while turning the key. If that does not work, see ignition repair.
