Choosing a Reliable Lockout Service: A Checklist
A short checklist to use on the phone, so you hire a lockout service you can trust even under pressure.
When you are locked out, the temptation is to call the first number you see. A minute of checking can save you money and trouble.
Questions to ask on the phone
- What is your business name and where are you based?
- What will the total cost be, including the call-out and any after-hours charge?
- How long until a technician can get here?
- Will the technician check my ID?
- Do you accept card payment and give receipts?
Warning signs
- The phone is answered with "locksmith" and no business name
- A very low price that will not be confirmed as a total
- Pressure to drill or replace a lock right away
- No ID check before opening the door
- Cash-only payment
What a fair quote looks like
A fair quote explains what is included and what could change it, for example if the lock is high-security or damaged. If the price changes on site, the technician should tell you why and get your agreement first.
Common lockout mistakes
- Forcing a window or door yourself and causing more damage than the lockout
- Using a credit card or wire on a deadbolt (it will not work, and can damage the latch)
- Leaving a car running while you check the door
- Forgetting to rekey after lost keys
